Another amazing song

I’ll really exploit unicode to the fullest.

Timir

One of the Mahadevi Verma’s greatest creations:

पंथ होने दो अपरिचित,
प्राण रहने दो अकेला।

और होंगे चरण हारे,
अन्य हैं जो लौटते दे शूल को संकल्प सारे।
दुख्ख व्रती निर्माण उन्मद,
यह अमरता नापते पद,
बांध देंगे अंक संसृति की तिमिर मे स्वर्ण वेला।

पंथ होने दो अपरिचित,
प्राण रहने दो अकेला।

Somehow nowdays I feel like posting such inspiring works.

God and Shairi

An incident in Ghalib’s life that I heard recently:

A friend, who used to hate Ghalib’s sad gazals, once asks Ghalib: “do you believe in god”. He quite simply says “yes”. The friend feels victorious and quickly fires his “victorious” question: “Then, how come he doesn’t listen to your prayers. You write so many sad gazals.” To which Ghalib smiles and replies:

“Allah shairi nahi samajhatein honge”.

Some more hindi

Ya I know i’m deviating from the original subject of the blog… Ghalib. But at least I’m live again!!

So have this, its and old favirout from Dharmveer Bharati:

srijan ki thakan bhool ja devataa,
abhi to paDi hai dharaa adhbani.

adhuri dharaa par nahi hai kanhee,
abhi swarg ki neev kaa bhi patA
srijan ki thakan bhool ja devataa

Some really insipring words. Though the poet is addressing a creative mind… an artist or a poet, but its still very relevant for people like me.

Hindi this time

I’m posting here after a long time. Somehow Anju reminded me of this blog. And Jeet I edited the sidebar. Now it’s little more informative.

Khair, today I somehow feel like quoting some good Hindi poetry. So take this:

dono aor prem palataa hai.
priya,
patanga to jalataa hi hai,
deepak bhi jalataa hai.

Another one, this time from Sumitra Nandan Pant:

paawas ritu thi, parvat pradesh,
pal-pal parivartit pakriti vesh

mekhala-akaar, parvat apaar,
apane sahasra drug-suman faad,
avalok raha tha bar-bar,
neeche jal me nij mahaakaar.

And now a self composed one:

ghar ho ik sundar chandan ka,
ghar ho wah komal bandhan,
yeh swapna sajeele mai apane saakaar nahi kar paaonga,
kalp-vriksha ki amal kali tujhe pyaar nahi de paaonga.

tum wah sundar phool ho jo,
jo patzhad me khil jaaye,
mai wah sukha patta hoon,
ho bahaar me zhad jaaye,
bhavuk kavita apane man ki har baar nahi de paaonga,
kalp-vriksha ki amal kali tujhe pyaar nahi de paaonga.

That’s it for now. We’ll be back with lot more. Stay tuned!!

tagaful

Its impossible for Jagjit Singh fans to forget this legendary gazal by Ghalib:

aah ko chaahiye ik umra asar hone tak,
kaun jeetaa hai teri zulf ke sar hone tak.

[sar hona == sulazhana in hindi]

I was just now listening to another rendition of the same gazal by Surriya (recorded sometime in early 50s). It’s really touching. The voice somehow perfectly expresses the feeling carried in the words. And to keep the impact alive throughout the song, only a few shers from the gazal are taken. The order of the shers is also altered. It starts with:

humne mana ki tagaful na karoge lekin,
khaak ho jaayegne hum tumko khabar hone tak.

[tagaful == neglect] [khaak == ashes]

All this has resulted in a real masterpiece. A must have for all Ghalib fans.

From Gazhals to Qawwalis

I’ve recently graduated from ghazals to qawwalis. Half an hour back I was listening to gazhals (obviously Ghalib), and now I’m listening to some real old qawaalis (Bollywood 1950s). So the graduation is that recent!!

Whatever, I never realized before that qawwalis can be that expressive, soothing, romantic and philosophical at the same time. The one which is currently struck in my head, and going to remain stuck for a while, is:

Na to kaarawa.n ki talaash hai,
Na to humsafar ki talaash hai.
Mere shaukhe-e-khana kharaab ko,
Teri rehguzar ki talaash.

Mere na-muraad is junoon ka,
ab hai ilaaj koi to maut hai.
Jo davaa ke naam pe zeher de,
us charaagar ki talaash hai.

Well must thank one of my uncles for giving me this age old song.
