Its is like.. pure joy.. like the sun rising or the spring coming… like the celebration of existence – Jim Morrison

Seekho na

This one is my all time favorite. And everything about it is fascinating…. composition, voice and especially lyrics. So here they are:

BTW, a lot of friends around me somehow rate the song equally high. I’m surprised. But ya, most of them are in love or perhaps pretend to their girl-friends that they are in love. Does that conclude anything? :)

Phir Wahi Talaash

Old Doordarshan serials are something that still keeps me mesmerized. Yesterday I bumped on to a gazal sung by chandan das, which used to be the title track of an amazing serial – “Phir wahi talaash”, aired on Sunday mornings 11:30 or 12. A realistic love story… from the teenage times of mine, when the mushiness has not evaporated. :)

So here goes the gazal …

[Correction: this was not the title track. ]

Sufi

I was at home this whole week, and managed to browse through my old collection of cassettes. Yes, cassettes are the same plastic objects which were used for storing audio in the last century. Anyways, the collection reminded me of my long lost favorites like – Sufi music. I used to like it a lot … voices of Abida Parveen and Shubha Mudgal … and lyrics by Khusrau, Manzoor Alam, Taji, Kabir. I suddenly fell in love with them again and spent the whole day listening to them. I’m posting a Persian song by khusrau and a Hindi one by Zaheen Shah Taji that I liked the most:

chonani dar nazar nazzaare gaan raa,
ke ronagh beshkani mahpare gaan raa.

[Your lovers behold your limitless beauty so as to make a thousand idols fade away]

to dar khaabe khosho man bhi to har shab,
shomaram taa sahar sayyare gaan raa.

[As I see you lost in the darkness of night, I count the stars till dawn (as if they were you)]

[ अफ़साना == a popular story, a legend ]

[ काशाना == a flourishing abode, a garden ]

[ तजल्ली == light ] [ क़ुर्बान-ए-तजल्ली == dedication to eternal light or god ]
[ उनवाँ == path, used here as ways of worship ]

[ कैफ़ == intoxication ]

[ ज़र्रा == dust ] [ हस्ती == existence ]

The above songs are from the album based on the Jahan-e-Khusrau concert. The album is called “The Realm of the Heart”.

Another amazing song

I’ll really exploit unicode to the fullest.

tagaful

Its impossible for Jagjit Singh fans to forget this legendary gazal by Ghalib:

aah ko chaahiye ik umra asar hone tak,
kaun jeetaa hai teri zulf ke sar hone tak.

[sar hona == sulazhana in hindi]

I was just now listening to another rendition of the same gazal by Surriya (recorded sometime in early 50s). It’s really touching. The voice somehow perfectly expresses the feeling carried in the words. And to keep the impact alive throughout the song, only a few shers from the gazal are taken. The order of the shers is also altered. It starts with:

humne mana ki tagaful na karoge lekin,
khaak ho jaayegne hum tumko khabar hone tak.

[tagaful == neglect] [khaak == ashes]

All this has resulted in a real masterpiece. A must have for all Ghalib fans.

Nirvana

I’m listening to Nirvana, after a really long gap. Brings back some weird and old memories. Everybody around me in college days used to love them. Man who sold the world was an anthem. Even now, if any of us starts…. tanaa-na-na-nanan …everyone else catches up…. we passed upon the stairs…..

I dont know what’s there in Nirvana which binds you, makes you resonate with the music… phyisically as well. You start moving in sync with the base. There are very few bands which have that affect… I guess “release me” Pearl Jam and to some extenct Alanis.

From Gazhals to Qawwalis

I’ve recently graduated from ghazals to qawwalis. Half an hour back I was listening to gazhals (obviously Ghalib), and now I’m listening to some real old qawaalis (Bollywood 1950s). So the graduation is that recent!!

Whatever, I never realized before that qawwalis can be that expressive, soothing, romantic and philosophical at the same time. The one which is currently struck in my head, and going to remain stuck for a while, is:

Na to kaarawa.n ki talaash hai,
Na to humsafar ki talaash hai.
Mere shaukhe-e-khana kharaab ko,
Teri rehguzar ki talaash.

Mere na-muraad is junoon ka,
ab hai ilaaj koi to maut hai.
Jo davaa ke naam pe zeher de,
us charaagar ki talaash hai.

Well must thank one of my uncles for giving me this age old song.
